The W55 had a displacement of 5.5L, which is the same as that of the R154 and is much larger than the 3L in the W58. The engine is also different from other Toyota engines because it has an in-line design, instead of V-type or straight-six designs like other Toyota engines have. This allows it to have more torque at lower RPMs, which is ideal for sports cars.
Was this post helpful or interesting?

My restored 1972 TR6 has the transmission conversion to toyota’s w58 5 speed . [reportedly from a mid 80’s toyota celica] . has anyone re-built one of these lately. the synchro is going out in 3rd gear so it’s time to fix that. as long as i have to open it up i might as well update/upgrade the rest of it. not sure what it needs yet but was wondering how difficult it is to acquire new gears.
